The North South Research Group (NSP) at PIK aims to improve its 
socio-economic expertise. Therefore we are
seeking to fill 1 PostDoc, 2 Junior Scientist (PhD candidates), and 1 
Scientific Assistant positions. The successful
applicants will be involved in the research activities of the NSP Group 
at PIK (www.pik-potsdam.de/nsp) which is
led by Prof. Dr. Jürgen Kropp. The Potsdam Institute for Climate Impact 
Research (PIK) was founded in 1992 and
now has a staff of about 290 people (North-South Group: 35) working on a 
variety of aspects of climate and
global change. Under the rooftop of the NSP Group work 10 different 
disciplines and the group is in particular
focusing on a reconciliation of climate protection targets, adaptation 
and development. Consequently all
applicants should enjoy working in an international and 
interdisciplinary team. The Junior Scientists have to enroll
as PhD candidates at one of the partner universities of PIK. The main 
working language is English. A close
cooperation with the other projects running under the North-South Theme 
is mandatory. Due to PIK's scientific
background experiences in the context of climate impact research are 
highly welcome. A demonstrated potential
for excellence in research is requested from all applicants for this 
vacancy.


*PostDoc: Economist or equivalent (2 years, with an option for a 
possible extension, nsp01)*
We offer one PostDoc position in Economics or Environmental Economics. 
Salary is according to E13 TV-L.

Duties
The successful applicant will conduct research on reconciliation of 
sustainable development and climate issues
like adaptation and mitigation. The focus will lie specifically on 
cities and rural areas and will include cost
analyses of adaptation and mitigation measures, e.g. for infrastructure 
adjustments on national and sub-national
levels.

Skills
This position requires expertise in advanced quantitative and/or 
qualitative methods, a background in
environmental economics, mathematical economics, i.e. optimization 
concepts, or related fields. The position
requires strong analytical and modeling skills (programming skills 
included). Understanding in organizational
theory, and concepts from operations research will be an asset as well 
as a strong interest for interdisciplinary
research, and the ability to work independently. Experiences in project 
management and steering would also be
an asset.


*PhD student: Social Scientist, Development Economist, or equivalent (28 
months, with an option for a possible
extension, nsp02)*
We offer one PhD position for a Social Scientist or Development 
Economist. Salary is according to E13/2 (50%) TV-L.

Duties
The successful applicant will conduct research on sustainable 
transitions of societies in view of climate change,
with a special focus on the large developing and emerging economies. In 
particular which role economic, political,
social and institutional development may play in regard to climate 
protection and adaptation goals. It is the
overarching aim to cross-check political goals against regional 
sustainability targets.

Skills
This position requires a background in social sciences (or a related 
field) with an emphasis on quantitative
methods. The position requires strong analytical skills. Understanding 
of organizational theory and the ability to abstract
and describe overarching socio-economic and political processes are an 
additional asset as well as a strong interest for
inter-disciplinary research.


*PhD student: Physicist or equivalent (28 months, with an option for a 
possible extension, nsp03)*
We offer one PhD position for a physicist or equivalent. Salary is 
according to E13/2 (50%) TV-L.

Duties
The successful applicant will conduct research and modeling on 
transitions towards sustainability. In particular
the candidate will work in the modeling and impact assessment theme of 
the research group. The modeling tasks
comprise the development of a generalized damage approach allowing the 
regional calculation of damage and
adaptation costs.

Skills
This position requires a background in environmental physics, 
mathematics, or a related field. The position
requires strong analytical and modeling skills (programming skills 
included). Understanding of the climate change
debate, cost assessment concepts, GIS, and modern qualitative and 
quantitative methods are an advantage as
well as a strong interest for interdisciplinary research, and the 
ability to work independently.


*Scientific assistant (prospective initial date: as soon as possible, 48 
hrs/month, nsp04)*
The successful candidate will be involved in the management of the 
research group, e.g. maintenance of
websites, preparation of presentations, and should support the working 
group head in particular (literature
surveys, data analysis, preparations for the Potsdam/Berlin Excellence 
Initiative "Earth in Transition", etc.). The
preferred working days are Thursday/Friday.

Skills
The position requires a background in web design and maintenance as well 
as in data analysis and standard
office software programs.
