Just carrying on the discussion from earlier...
Micheal Gillen from 'Stephen F. Austin University' just contacted me on
twitter to say that they use VuFind as an Interafce for Summon:
http://library.sfasu.edu/find/
I think that Graham Seaman from Royal Holloway Uni is also developing
something very similar.
Personally I think this is the future of Search tools within
Libraries.....paying for the indexed data compiled by vendors like
Serials Solutions and ExLibris, but presenting it with a open source or
in-house developed front-end.

Maureen, Owen,
I completely agree with Owen's post...but just to muddy the waters even
more...
I know of at least one institution that is using a combination of
Discovery tools...one for its data and the other for its interface. I'll
try and dig out some more info if you are interested in this as well?

There is an issue about what you mean by 'discovery tool' - I'd break
this down into two types:
Discovery for local content (e.g. local implementation of VuFind,
Blacklight, Primo, Encore, Aquabrowser)
Discovery for local and non-local content (e.g. Primo Central, Summon,
Encore Synergy, EBSCO Discovery)
The latter category might be further divided - I'm afraid terminology
gets murky but my preference is to talk about 'aggregated' vs
'federated' - meaning 'aggregated' tries to index content in single
place, while 'federated' sends out search to multiple (remote) indexes.
Based on this terminology my understanding would be Summon (and Primo
Central?) is aggregated and Encore Synergy is federated. Note that there
isn't real broad agreement on terminology in this area - and there maybe
a spectrum (full aggregation to full federation, and any mix in between)
This table gives a summary, although I'm afraid it isn't up to date
http://helibtech.com/HE+Systems+Review - if people have more up to date
information please add it (not sure you can add directly, may need to
leave a comment in the 'discussion' area)
Just a few examples of both types off the top of my head...
LSE = VuFind
RHUL = Summon + VuFind
Open University = EBSCO Discovery
Oxford = Primo/Primo Central
Edinburgh = EBSCO Discovery
Sussex = Aquabrowser
