Dear all,
Sorry for being very late to reply to this thread...
I'm also a member of ADSHE (Dyslexia specialists in HE) - we have
Regional Groups which meet once or twice a year. At these events we have
a short meeting, time to discuss current issues and topics of concern,
resource sharing over lunch and a guest speaker. Each member takes a
turn to 'host' the event and provide the refreshments. Each group get
around £200 per year from ADSHE to help towards the costs of the
external speakers.
It works well, the meetings/training is effectively free (unless its
your turn to host) albeit a local train ticket, members get a chance to
chat and are less isolated (we also invite free-lance staff) and staff
development budgets are not hit too hard.
Regards

Hi,
Here in Cambridge we're setting up a TeachMeet for librarians -
http://teachmeet.pbworks.com/Cambridge-Librarian-TeachMeet - sharing
and
learning from each other, focusing on "techie tools and teaching tips"
-
relatively cheap to put on and all very sharing and interactive.
We're also using 23 Things in a couple of different ways - 1] fairly
generic so that any member of staff can work through the programme
http://23thingscambridge.blogspot.com/ it's designed for library staff
and 2] with greater subject specificity
http://23things-cammedlib.blogspot.com/ focusing on the needs of a
group
of librarians working in a particular environment (medical library).
These 2 programmes are designed for library staff but of course can be
tweeked depending on the intended audience.
Best wishes,
Isla

Hi Jonathan
ALDinHE recently ran a professional development event in Reading
covering a number of key learning development issues. The event used
case studies, discussion and sharing of good practice with the aim of
enabling Learning Developers to build skills and capacity, both
personally and as a network of professionals.
The programme was as follows
1. Giving effective one-to-one Learning Development advice
2. Email Learning Development advice (using technology to expand your
service)
3. Marketing and promoting your Learning Development service
4. Embedding Learning Development in your institution
5. Resources to support changing student populations
6. Researching Learning Development and getting published
We are planning to hold a similar event in Leeds in January. I wonder
if we might also run something similar in Scotland - at cost to make
it
as affordable as possible. If we could estimate how many colleagues in
Scotland would be interested in such an event that might help us to
being planning ...
It would be helpful to hear what others think about this idea ..
All the best for now
John

Subject: Staff development on a shoestring
Dear all
My staff development budget has disappeared. (So has the travel
budget.
Something to do with global recession - who knew?)
Apparently, my imagination has also disappeared.
So, please, suggestions for meaningful staff development on a
shoestring
for a talented, experienced, motivated team of learner developers
(both
generalists and also with a SPLD / disabilities specialism).
I can juggle my finances to make some money available, but not much.
yours
Jonathan
