Research Associate: Dust emission from forming and evolving galaxies
Jeremiah Horrocks Institute, University of Central Lancashire
Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position at the Jeremiah Horrocks
Institute of the University of Central Lancashire, UK, to carry out research
into dust emission from forming and evolving galaxies, working with Dr.
Cristina Popescu. The holder of this position will perform calculations
of the transfer of radiation in numerically simulated galaxies, with the aim
of predicting the relation of the amplitude and spectrum of dust emission to
the basic physical characteristics of the galaxies and their environment,
considered in a cosmological context. The postdoctoral fellow will have
access to the state-of-the art cosmological simulations and dusty radiative
transfer codes developed at the Horrocks Institute. There will also be
outstanding opportunities for confrontation of these predictions with
state-of-the-art observations due to the participation of the Horrocks
Institute in Herschel Space Observatory/ATLAS far-infrared/submm and
GAMA optical spectroscopic extragalactic surveys.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in astrophysics or a closely related
field. He or she would ideally have experience in dusty radiative
transfer/dust emission calculations; some familiarity with N-body/SPH/AMR
calculations and/or semi-analytic galaxy formation/chemical evolution models
also would be of advantage. However, scientists with other research
backgrounds in theoretical and observational extragalactic astronomy who are
highly motivated to work in these areas of research are also strongly
encouraged to apply.
The position is available from June 2011. The closing date for the receipt of
applications is 29 April 2011. Applicants should submit electronic copies of
their CV, publication list, research interests & plans, and the contact
details for three referees, along with the Application Form (available from
