LSE Summer School in Survey Methods and Analysis
25th July - 12th August 2011
London School of Economics
***apologies for cross-posting***
This three-week course develops an understanding of all of the key areas
of survey methodology, from data collection to sampling, to
questionnaire design and testing, to the analysis of survey data. In the
first week the course describes the different data collection methods
that are used in surveys, focusing on comparisons of major modes
(face-to-face, telephone, and mail) and alternative methods of data
collection (diaries, administrative records, direct observation, etc.).
In the second week we address different aspects of questionnaire design
and question testing, providing hands-on experience of designing
questionnaires and survey questions. In the final week we consider how
to analyse survey data, covering regression and latent variable
modelling.
The instructors are from the LSE's Methodology Institute, the University
of Michigan's Summer Institute in Survey Research Techniques, and
National Centre for Social Research's (NatCen) Questionnaire Development
and Testing Hub. The course is aimed at graduate students, early career
academic researchers, researchers in the public and private sector, and
managers/commissioners of research in the public, private and third
sectors. Some background in basic quantitative analysis (such as
descriptive statistics, statistical inference and simple linear
regression) is helpful and expected, but no further specific knowledge
is required. Further details can be found at
