medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

> Adela of Blois (d. 1137) Adela was the youngest daughter of William the
Conqueror and Mathilda. She married Stephen of Blois, was active in French
politics, seems to have been responsible for getting Stephen to go on the
Crusade of 1101 after he abandoned the first crusade, and, when he died on
the latter venture, was very active in endowing monasteries and churches.
goodness.
sure, Adela was a good and faithful daughter of Bill the Bastard (and always
styled herself as "daughter of the most Glorious King of the English in all
her many charters), and was definitely a Tough Lady (just ask Stephen-Henry,
or their kids, Bill and Teddy); and she piously retired (or, perhaps, *was*
retired) to the Cluniac priory of Marcigny in the later 1120's and died there;
but i don't think that i have *ever* seen any suggestion anywhere that she was
even considered for beatification, much less sainthood.
on what does this entry in our precious Saint o'the Day rest?
btw, as far as i am aware, there was no "Crusade of 1101" --Stephen-Henry had
disgraced himself before the walls of Antioch (before its capture) on Crux I,
came home and was (probably) shamed by Adela into returning to the Scene of
his Shame, where he died soon thereafter.
i believe that part of the story is related in some Old French Chanson de
Geste or other...
