Thanks for replying, Joe - in fact we are planning to use barcodes in a collections management context and not for exhibitions, although your project does sound extremely interesting.
best wishes,
Sheila

For quite a few different reasons, we're now planning to use barcodes
instead of RFID tags, and I've been asked by the project group to
check whether any other museum in the UK currently uses barcodes -
preferably on objects although locations would do as well!

The "Dinojaws" temporary exhibition at the Natural History Museum
used barcodes to track visitors from one exhibit to another. They
found they had to use a slightly more expensive type of scanner which
scans in all directions. If the scanner is too close to the barcode
then it won't work so you need to design the exhibit housing appropriately.
Were you planning on using the barcodes for an exhibition or for
collections management?
If its an exhibition then if you give more details I or someone from
the NHM can give more details on the type of issues you'll have.
Best wishes
Joe
