Hi Louise,
We are experiencing similar; with many staff still unaware that they have to use encrypted memory sticks. Our readers are OK to use non-encrypted sticks to read data just not able to save anything on to them.
It is a little frustrating and is something we often end up trouble-shooting. We give the same advice as Catherine: use network storage space or email work to yourself.
Our Trust IT does not provide users with encrypted sticks and we are instructed to direct them back their managers who can arrange purchase of appropriate encrypted sticks from our supplies department.
Regards,
Vicky

Subject: Re: Encrypted Memory Sticks
Hi Louise
This is the situation here in TEWV as well. We are required to ban users
from using unencrypted memory sticks; notices are displayed to this
effect. Unencrypted memory sticks are not allowed to be brought on to
trust premises.
I believe all trust are now having to introduce encrypted memory sticks,
so NHS staff from organisations other than your own should be able to
obtain them through their IT departments. Students on placement have to
find other methods of saving their work, e.g. uploading to online
storage or emailing files and search results to themselves; the trust
does not provide encrypted memory sticks for them.
Not very helpful, I know! Ir is worth noting that ass a mental health
trust we don't have the hordes of students that acute trusts have; while
there are a fair number of student nurses and AHPs about, medical
students are doing only their psychiatry rotations here.

Catherine

Subject: Encrypted Memory Sticks
Hi All
I'm wondering if anyone can provide advice on how they have dealt with
the use of encrypted memory sticks in the library.
Our Trust IT department has said that from 1st April only encrypted
memory sticks will be able to be used on PC's within the Trust. All
Trust staff will need to order the memory sticks through the IT
department which will then get charged back to the department of the
member of staff. This is fine, however we have an IT suite which is used
by medical and nursing students and PCT employees and other NHS staff
who will not neccessarily have an encrypted memory stick or be able to
order one.
Has anyone else been in this situation and how did you and your IT
departments deal with it?
Many thanks
Louise
