I hesitate to make any claim of  "research" in this field, but there are 
basic bits about it in my
Empires of the Word, pp. 407-411
and
The Last Lingua Franca. pp. 220-221, 284

You may also be interested in
Marc Fumaroli: Quand l'Europe parlait français (Livre de poche, éditions 
Fallois, 2001)
though this is more about  French culture than language use.

I think it's an interesting phenomenon, so I'd be happy to cooperate in 
further studies.
