Research fellow
Fixed term for 2.5 years
We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Fellow (Grade 7) to be part of a newly developing research team delivering a NIHR-funded programme of research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The post holder will co-ordinate and manage a large cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate two methods of case finding for undiagnosed COPD in 50 general practices.
The trial is part of a programme of work which also includes a COPD disease cohort to investigate prognosis among both new and existing COPD patients in primary care, and a series of observational and interventional studies to investigate the interrelationships between occupation and COPD. The trial will include the recruitment of over 50 general practices in the West Midlands, the screening of ~34,000 patients at risk by questionnaire with additional lung function measurements in those reporting respiratory symptoms in ~6400 patients to identify COPD.
The successful candidate will have a good first degree in a health-related field (a PhD or equivalent experience would be an advantage), experience of managing an RCT or similar large study in primary care, and good quantitative research and analysis skills. They will gain the opportunity to work as part of a newly developing team in the field of COPD, and to work in close partnership with primary and secondary health care sectors. The post holder will be based in the Department of Public Health Epidemiology & Biostatistics in the School of Health and Population Sciences, and will also participate in the departmental undergraduate and postgraduate teaching programmes.

Fixed term for 5 years
We are seeking an enthusiastic Research Fellow (Grade 7) to be part of a newly developing research team delivering a NIHR-funded programme of research on chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The post holder will set up, co-ordinate and manage a cohort study of new and existing COPD patients identified from 50 general practices.
The cohort is part of a programme of work which also includes a cluster randomised controlled trial to evaluate two methods of case finding for undiagnosed COPD in the community, and a series of observational and interventional studies to investigate the interrelationships between occupation and COPD. The cohort will include the recruitment of over 50 general practices in the West Midlands and the follow-up of ~2500 patients with COPD. Although funded in the first instance for 5 years, the programme will be a platform for future development of both the cohort and additional intervention studies.
The successful candidate will have a good first degree in a health-related field (a PhD or equivalent experience would be an advantage), experience of managing a cohort study or similar large study in primary care/community settings, and good quantitative and qualitative research and analysis skills.
