Another sad bereavement of an acquaintance not yet old.
May she rest in peace

Inspirational is the word everyone ? her family and friends, colleagues from
school and the netball court, former pupils ? uses to describe my partner
Michaela Emanus, who has died of cancer aged 52. Throughout her life, she
displayed the tenacity and hard work that characterise so many Caribbean
migrants who build successful, fulfilling lives in Britain.
Michaela was born in Soufri?re, St Lucia. For several years, she and her
younger brother Alex were cared for there by relatives until they were sent
for by their mother and father, Ursula and Anthony, who had settled in East
Dulwich, south London. Michaela vividly recalled arriving as a
seven-year-old on the boat train at Waterloo and realising she could no
longer recognise her parents. When Michaela and Alex reached the family
home, it was to meet for the first time two younger sisters born in London.
Michaela was educated at Heber Road primary school and Friern girls' school,
where, she always said, the best of her teachers fostered her will to
achieve. There she made friends who remained close for the rest of her life.
After a degree in modern languages at the Polytechnic of Central London and
a PGCE at Goldsmiths College, Michaela taught at Deptford Green school,
Lewisham, where we met, and then for 19 years at Dunraven school, Streatham.
Later, she received a master's in comparative education.
In the classroom, Michaela's warmth and infectious determination ensured
that every student achieved their maximum potential. Her results were
exceptional. She always refused promotion, believing she could do most as a
teacher, not a manager.
Michaela brought the same devotion to coaching and managing Raiders Netball
Club, her Lewisham-based team. Even as cancer spread, she was teaching and
cheering from the touchline. She was especially keen to develop the talents
of younger players from disadvantaged backgrounds like hers.
At home she was the linchpin of her family. She learned to tolerate my love
of the outdoors ? our first date involved orienteering on Hampstead Heath ?
and I soon came to love our summer trips home to St Lucia.
Michaela is survived by me, Ursula, Alex, her sisters Sandra, Brenda and
Andrea, and seven nieces and nephews.
