When scientists report that there are only 1,000 Gloomy
Tube-Nosed Bats left in the world, how do they make such
estimates? Bryan Manly, author of "Statistics for
Environmental Science and Management" and a number of
other texts is a leading expert on such matters. He covers
these and other methods for counting and sampling in his
online course “Ecological and Environmental Sampling,”
Feb. 26 – Mar. 26 at statistics.com.
Dr. Manly is also an expert in resampling methods (bootstrap
and permutation procedures). If you are interested in working
with him in person and seeing beautiful Wyoming, check out his
in-person workshop: "Computer-Intensive Statistical Methods in
Biology," University of Wyoming Conference Center, 2229 Grand
Avenue, Laramie, Wyoming, March 14 to 18, 2011. Details here:
The online course “Ecological and Environmental Sampling” covers
sampling methods and analyses used to study of the density and
abundance of animals and plants, and other important biological
variables. It starts with classic random sampling methods and
their extensions (systematic sampling, stratified sampling and
more), and goes on to cover methods (such as adaptive sampling,
mark recapture, line transects, and more) that have particular
applicability to estimating population sizes. The theoretical
basis behind methods is discussed, but the emphasis of the
course is on understanding how to use methods effectively
rather than the derivation of the equations used.
Bryan Manly is the author of "Statistics for Environmental
Science and Management," "The Statistics of Natural Selection
on Animal Populations," "Resource Selection by Animals," and
many other books and articles. He is a consultant with
Western EcoSystem Technology, Inc. in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Dr. Manly is available to course participants throughout the
period, taking comments and questions on a private discussion forum.
The course will require about 15 hours per week, and there are no
set hours when you must be online.
