Hi Kirsteen,
I think Sanchia is on the right track with the business case pointers.
I noted to our HR Director that our recruitment profile would benefit
from presenting ourselves in the job marketplace as an inclusive
employer where people's identities were respected. This would play a
part in attracting the best talent as somewhere people feel valued.
I also noted Stonewall's provision of advice and expertise in the
employment field. I think that the key point was that Stonewall's
Diversity Champion status is directly aimed at the employment side of
things. Therefore, the specific advice was the real attraction.
Membership provides:
- some reassurance when considering specific situations in the workplace
(for example, someone raised the issue of same sex sleeping facilities
on a student trip recently and we were able to discuss best practice
communication with Stonewall)
- an opportunity to get a second opinion on how we might want to
approach particular equality impact assessments and also Human REsources
Policies
- advice on monitoring procedures (particularly helpful with the
Equality Act and its attendant requirements for analysis)
- the Workplace Index really does highlight ground that we have to make
up to achieve best practice (it's anonymous so no embarassment factor).
I hope this helps, Kirsteen, although you've probably already rehearsed
these arguments and if people don't see it as an issue, it's very tough
to change their position. Good luck and I trust you won't be
discouraged by other people's positions.
Regards,
Dave

Can I ask everyone who is a Stonewall champion how they funded it? Our
personnel department are not interested - they say they have other
higher priorities. I'm based in Student Affairs with a very small
budget. I've tried to bring together personnel, marketing and a few
other key areas to hear a presentation from Stonewall but they are just
not interested in contributing anything! I'm completely stuck now with
no funds.

We are a Stonewall Diversity Champion and participate in the Stonewall
Workplace Equality Index (WEI) each year (since 2008).
Speaking on a purely personal basis (since I've not had time to confer
with colleagues in Salford's WEI team), I would say that the latter has
proved most effective in helping to achieve organisational change here.
The rigour of the audit process in WEI has certainly improved our
performance in a number of key areas, such as equality monitoring,
procurement and engagement with the wider community. Perhaps most
importantly, I think the very public nature of the whole WEI exercise
did much to persuade our senior managers to put LGB equality onto their
agenda, which they did by appointing one of the associate directors of
HR to head up the Stonewall WEI team and including our results as one of
the institution's key performance indicators.
Like other colleagues at other HEIs who have participated in this
discussion so far, we are very keen to share ideas and experiences
across the sector.
Warm regard
Ken

Dear All
We are investigating the idea of the University of Essex becoming a
Stonewall Diversity Champion.
If anyone else has done this, could you contact me and let me know if
you feel it has been worthwhile/successful?
Kind regards.
