Dear All
Research Councils UK (RCUK) is planning work associated with the 2012 Games.
We currently fund a pilot initiative called Knowing Sport (http://www.podium.ac.uk/showcase/view/92/knowing-sport) which has been awarded the official London 2012 Inspire mark. This forms part of the public engagement programme of the International Convention on Science Education and Medicine in Sport (ICSEMIS) to be staged in Glasgow by the Brunel 2012 Consortium (http://www.podium.ac.uk/events/view/40/icsemis-2012).
As part of the Knowing Sport pilot, ten universities have been selected to hold events in January and February 2011 aimed at engaging the public with the science, medicine and academic disciplines related to sport and inspired by London 2012. The scheme is delivered by Podium, the Further and Higher Education Unit for the 2012 Games. One of the events drew in January sales shoppers to trial the effectiveness of matching motivational music tracks to fitness training and another saw an interactive debate with academics and sporting leaders on the ethics of human enhancement in sport.
RCUK is funding a wealth of research projects connected to sport and the 2012 Games. For example, EPSRC is funding Elite Sport Performance in Training (ESPRIT) which uses engineering expertise to support UK Olympic teams in the period leading up to the 2012 Olympic games. AHRC is funding students working in sportswear design and the history of the Olympics and ESRC is funding research into morality in sport and the Olympics and risk management. NERC has provided tidal predictions for the Olympic sailing team and also runs the GB alert system for non native species in our waters which can affect those engaged with water sports. (An example would be the killer shrimp invasion at Grafham Water last November!) This is just a few examples, there is a lot more going on!
