PhD Projects for October 2011 in Neuroscience and Mental Health
****************
The MRC Centre for Neuropsychiatric Genetics and Genomics at Cardiff
University School of Medicine is recruiting for both 3 and 4 year PhD
programmes.
Research is underpinned by the Bioinformatics Biostatistics Unit and by
work on functional genomics.
The projects and supervisors are:
* Investigating the genetic and phenotypic relationships of Bipolar
Disorder. Supervisors: Dr Marian Hamshere, Dr Elen Russell, Prof Nicholas
Craddock
* Exploring genetic variation and risk of psychosis during adolescence
in the ALSPAC birth cohort. Supervisors: Dr Stanley Zammit, Prof Michael
Owen, Dr Valentina Moskvina
* Identifying genetic modifiers of Huntington’s disease. Supervisors:
Prof Peter Holmans, Dr Lesley Jones
* Examining the genetic overlap of neurodevelopmental disorders with
a focus on ADHD and autism. Supervisors: Dr Marian Hamshere, Prof Anita
Thapar, Prof Michael O’Donovan
* Genes and Pathways in psychiatric disorders: assessment of novel
statistical techniques. Supervisors: Dr Valentina Moskvina, Dr Andrew
Pocklington , Prof Michael O’Donovan
* Role of genes involved in synaptic plasticity in schizophrenia.
Supervisors: Prof Michael O’Donovan, Prof Michael Owen, Dr Andrew
Pocklington , Prof Peter Holmans
* Investigating the behavioural consequences of perturbed Cdkn1c
expression; developmental programming, dopamine and mental illness.
Supervisors: Dr Anthony Isles , Rosalind John
* Identification and functional characterization of new genes for
autosomal recessive Parkinson’s disease. Supervisors: Dr Huw Morris, Dr
Nigel Williams, Prof Derek Blake
* Psychopathology in children with 22q11-Deletion-Syndrome (22q11DS).
Supervisors: Dr Marianne van den Bree, Prof Michael Owen
* Biological pathways in psychiatric disorders – identifying
disease-relevant interactions. Supervisors: Dr Andrew Pocklington (main),
Dr Valentina Moskvina, Dr Irena Spasic*, Jianhua Shao* (* School of
Computer Science)
* The molecular genetics of myoclonus-dystonia syndrome. Supervisors:
Prof Derek Blake, Dr Huw Morris
* Identification of a new gene for chromosome 9 lined Frontotemporal
Dementia with Motor Neuron Disease. Supervisors: Dr Huw Morris, Dr Nigel
Williams, Prof Derek Blake
