British Society of Criminology 2011 Conference
The first call for papers has been announced for the 2011 British Society of Criminology Annual Conference to be hosted by Northumbria University in Newcastle-upon-Tyne between 3-6th July 2011. Booking is also open.
The conference theme is ‘Economies and Insecurities of Crime and Justice’.
A range of key issues and controversies connect to the main theme of the conference with specific emphasis on:
• Economic crisis, public spending and the criminal justice sector
• Recessional climates and the landscapes of criminal enterprise
• The political economies of crime, crime control and criminal justice
• Social exclusion, consumer culture and criminal enterprise
• The academic and practitioner interface – global to North East
• Fear, insecurity and victimisation
• Global economies and local insecurities
Keynote Speakers
Jackie Harvey is Professor of Financial Management at Newcastle Business School and academic leader of the financial management, risk and performance subject group. Her research is focused in the area of criminal financial management, in particular money laundering.
Ian Loader is Professor of Criminology and the Director of the Centre for Criminology at the University of Oxford. Ian is currently researching and writing about the commodification of security and will be speaking on the topic of economic crises, public spending and the Criminal Justice System.
Stephen Shaw was the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman for England and Wales. His role included the investigation of complaints from prisoners, those subject to probation supervision, and immigration detainees, and the investigation of all deaths in prisons and immigration removal centres, as well as the deaths of residents of probation hostels (approved premises).
Jill Peay is Professor of Law at the London School of Economics. Jill’s research specialisms are mental health law, decision-making and the treatment of mentally disordered offenders and she will be speaking on the subject of recession, crime and mental health.
Mike Levi is Professor at Cardiff University. Mike has been conducting international research on the control of white-collar crime, corruption and money laundering/financing of terrorism since 1972 and will be speaking on the subject of economic crises, criminal markets and organised crime.
Liz Kelly is Professor of Sexualised Violence and Director of the Child and Woman Abuse Studies Unit, London Metropolitan University. Liz is currently involved in mapping legislation on violence against women and their children and homophobic violence across the European Union and will be speaking on the subject of economies and insecurities of crime and victimisation.
Loïc Wacquant is Professor of Sociology at the University of California, Berkeley and researcher at the Centre de sociologie européenne, Paris. Loïc’s research interests span across the theme of the conference and he will be speaking on the subject of social exclusion, criminality and recessional climates.
