Hi All
Mindful of data protection legislation, we are currently reviewing our policies on student verification when dealing with phone enquiries. Currently no information is given out unless the student provides their student ID number and confirms their full name.
A situation has arisen where a member of senior staff was asked to return a call to a student who had made an enquiry; when the student was contacted, apparently she had no knowledge of this enquiry and had not contacted us. No personal information had been disclosed to the caller so there has been no breach of data protection, but we are now wondering whether we need to ask security questions before even starting a conversation, no matter what the nature of the enquiry.
Do any other libraries have similar security measures in place? Any advice or feedback would be gratefully received.
Many thanks,
Claire Stevens
