Hi Peter
I haven't experimented a great deal with the system in Microsoft Word
but I understand that the capabilities are not as advanced as systems
such as RefWorks and EndNote. One of the main reasons that our students
use EndNote is because they can format their references in our
customised Harvard style. It would be difficult to promote the Word
facility if it couldn't support the correct formatting. Having said that
it may well be that the Word facility is suitable for some uses and that
a fully developed reference management system may not always be
necessary. Most University PCs here have Word 2003 so we may investigate
further as we move to later versions which have this feature. I too
would be interested in others' experiences to date.
While I don't believe that we necessarily need to try to get all
students to use a particular system, I do think there is much potential
for us to exploit reference management systems in a teaching context. I
am particularly interested in how we teach the principles of good
information and reference management as opposed to "training on
software". What may work for a student who simply wants to get the
reference list right and not lose any marks for poor referencing may be
different to a student who wants to group and organise all their
reference material, share with peers or tutors, or add notes for
example.
Best wishes

Subject: Managing references : a heretical question
Dear All,
It's Friday and referencing has never been my favourite teaching topic.
I am wondering if our students are managing their references using
Microsoft Word : why are we worrying about getting them to use RefWorks
and EndNote? Maybe "it's horses for courses"?
Anyone out there using the Word facility?
Best wishes
Peter
