Abstract
The circulation of works and of intellectual reference-points such as
neoliberal thought or critical theory among cultures has increased
with globalization. What can be called the figure of the "global
thinker", embodied by Bourdieu for instance, also emerged during this
period. Does this mean that the intellectual field has become global?
Despite these phenomena, it seems that intellectual fields are still
very deeply rooted in national life and circumscribed by national
borders. But this opposition between the national and the global might
be just one aspect of the question. This presentation will explore the
obstacles to the globalization of the intellectual field through a
structural approach and from a socio-historical perspective, taking
into account a variety of factors: from economic conditions (the
publishing industry and the press) to models of committed
intellectuals, via the division of intellectual labour. It will also
examine two new causes which emerged during the era of globalization:
the struggle against neoliberalism and the movement in favour of
translation.
All welcome.
