Career Development Fellow
Cambridge
The MRC Biostatistics Unit is concerned with the development and application of statistical methods in medicine and biology. This includes research into the epidemiology and aetiology of disease, the development of models of the natural history of disease, the design and analysis of trials of preventive measures or of therapeutic or prophylactic agents and the evaluation of medical technology, and the development of mathematical-statistical techniques. Much of the work of the unit is performed in collaboration with other council units and other scientific workers
The Unit is offering an exciting opportunity to work in dynamical systems modelling. A statistician is required to contribute to a programme of research into applied statistical analysis of, and methodological developments relating to, Bayesian graphical models incorporating dynamical systems, i.e. graphs in which some of the modelling components are defined in terms of differential equations. Application areas of particular interest include infectious disease dynamics, computational biology, and glucose control in diabetes management.
You will have a PhD in statistics, or relevant subject, and statistical computing experience, e.g. R, BUGS. Knowledge/experience of Bayesian computation and/or differential equations would be advantageous. You must have good communication skills and be able to contribute substantially to writing scientific papers. Depending on the skills and interests of the successful applicant, the research could involve, but is not limited to, development of internationally renowned software at the forefront of statistical modelling (BUGS: http://www.mrc-bsu.cam.ac.uk/bugs/)
