Hello,
the Young Statisticians Section of the Royal Statistical Society would like to update you with further details about our exciting event taking place this February.
-------
25th February 2011,
'The Data Generation', a statistical literacy workshop
at the RSS headquarters, London.
Organised by the YSS, this one day event is designed to present ongoing efforts to promote statistical thinking and to increase the comfort level in talking and using statistics. Speakers will provide insight into the Voice of Young Science and Sense About Statistics with their presentation on "Standing up for Science". Representatives of the getstats campaign will host an interactive session entitled "Stats Busking: creating opportunities to communicate with new wider public audiences". This is a creative session in which groups will consider new ways of communicating the benefits, power and beauty of statistics. Following lunch, David Spiegelhalter, the Winton Professor of the Public Understanding of Risk, will share his life-long experience in interacting with the public, the media and politicians with an engaging presentation "Communicating subtle statistical analyses to the innumerate masses". The event will round off with a workshop on engaging with the media by Andrew Garratt from the Royal Statistical Society. This workshop will look at what statistics the major newspapers report and how they do it, and look at the fundamentals of drafting a news release. After this there will be a group-based interactive session to draft a news release.
Registration will take place at 10.30am and the event will take place from 11am to 5.15pm, after which there will be a drinks reception. Lunch is supplied.
The event is open to all statisticians interested in communicating statistics but in particular career young statisticians, from students to those in the early stages of a statistical career. The costs are as follows:
Student fellows £25; GradStats £32; Fellows £35; RSS Members £40; Other £50
