Hi Helen

At the University of Northampton we produce certificates using the name
that the students have enrolled with. Any changes must be made prior to
Senate conferring their award. Their request to change their name must
be supported by official documents.

We have only changed names on certificates after conferment for students
who go through gender reassignment.

I would be very interested to see a summary of responses,

With best wishes

Sue

Subject: Format/order of names on degree certificates

At the University of Sheffield, we are asked on a number of occasions
each year, predominantly by international students, to produce degree
certificates with the format of their name appearing in a different
order e.g. surname appearing first followed by forenames. We are in the

process of agreeing a policy (which includes consideration of being able

to accurately verify the correct ownership of degree certificates
downstream to third parties when requested).

I would welcome your feedback on:
1. Any policies or procedures you apply at your own institution for the
format/ordering of names on your degree certificates.
2. Whether individual students can choose how the order of their names
appears on their degree certificate.
3. Whether you allow changes to names on your degree certificates
following graduation, and if so under what circumstances.

I would be happy to circulate a summary of responses if this would be of

interest.

Thank you in advance for your input.
regards, Helen Grindley
