Subject: [UNCLASSIFIED] - Announcement of national debate on measuring well-being
With apologies if you are already aware.
You may have seen from recent media reports that the Prime Minister has asked Jil Matheson, as National Statistician, to lead a national debate on the measurement of well-being, and develop a relevant programme of work.
The Budget 2010 report noted that work is under way in ONS and the Cabinet Office to review how the recommendations from the Stiglitz, Sen and Fitoussi report could be built on and developed in the UK. The Spending Review settlement provides some resource for this and the National Statistician has now launched a programme of work to develop broader measures of national well-being to complement GDP, and to ensure that this is relevant to policy development, decision making and in assessing the performance of government. The national debate runs from now until 15 April.
Do join the debate, especially by responding to the consultation document at:
http://www.ons.gov.uk/well-being
We are also planning a number of events around the country. Do get in touch if you are interested in hosting an event. We will post details of events on the website above, as arrangements are finalised.
Thank you
Paul
