Hi Paul,
The current name for the shell you have is Macrocallista nimbosa (Lightfoot, 1786) (Common name: Sunray Venus). You can find details of the synonomy etc on the website Malacog Version 4.1.1. (http://www.malacolog.org/search.php?nameid=13340), also in 'Seashells of Southern Florida' by Mikkelson & Bieler (2008). Its distribution is North Carolina to Florida, Gulf of Mexico and is typical of western Florida coasts.
If you need any more info/pictures let me know :-)
Jen

Hello Natsca members
I wonder if anyone can assist us please?
We have a bivalve shell in the Herbert's collection named "Cytherea gigantica" or "gigantea"
Any information would be most useful. Searching the internet has so far been fruitless.
We suspect the name is an old term no longer in use as the paper it is written upon in pencil is foxed and very fragile.
Best wishes
Paul
