Hello all,

Just to give a bit of background to support Ann's email.

Last year there were two meetings to discuss common issues re NMH - Manchester and Oxford. The meetings came about because across the country people felt that they would benefit from sharing ideas and experience - that's as per Simon's point below.

Earlier this year there were two meetings - Sheffield and Newport.

Since then there have been 5 meetings during w/c 22nd November - Bristol, Leicester, Manchester, Sheffield, Oxford. There was a meeting convenor for each meeting and the conveners are meeting next week in Oxford. The sole agenda item at the recent meetings was a possible NMH Charter. The draft Charter was originally brought for discussion by an attendee at one of the meetings earlier this year.

The meetings are open to anyone with an interest in NMH and are advertised via Dis-forum, NADP, and any other list that people share them with.

There are two discussion lists for people with an interest in NMH - one is co-ordinated via NADP and the other is the Disability Support Co-ordinators list co-ordinated by Fiona Valentine of UClan.

Hope that helps.

Marie

Further to this...I do think caution needs to be exercised before rushing to judgement concerning the reasons for apparent inconsistency.

Colleagues across the sector have done, in my opinion, an amazing job in developing high quality support arrangements "in spite" of the funding system and challenges evident within the system - not least that the funding in HE is made available to the individual - as opposed to the principle used in statutory education and FE - where funding is made available to the schools / institutions - allowing for a higher level of anticipation, planning and co-ordination.

Hopefully, the work done to date and planned on The Charter and the greater exposure of what's available in different institutions (with costs etc) will serve to be a natural catalyst for a greater level of consistency. I sense a wish for this to happen and a preparedness to learn from others in the interests of further positive developments.

Yours - Simon Bloor - Access SUMMIT

There has been strides towards having a NHM Charter / Code of Conduct already. Marie Norris from Clear Links is co-ordinating it. There has been 5 meetings around the country to feed into it and agree on it following 2 meetings last July of NMH co-coordinators. Please contact her for more details and the Charter that is proposed.

If you are interested then there is a jiscmail group for NMH co-ordinators that you can join. I believe that you do no need to be members of NADP in order to join it.

I have copied Marie into this so she can comment on anything I may have got wrong or offer more information.

Yours
Ann
