Call for on-camera Experts
Award winning documentary film house, Providence Pictures, is seeking
scholars, researchers, engineers, and other experts to contribute to a
NOVA/PBS film series ‹ Building Wonders of the World.
Drawing on the successful formula of Providence Pictures¹ last three films ‹
Secrets of the Parthenon, Riddles of the Sphinx, and Building the Great
Cathedrals ‹ our new six-part documentary film series, Building Wonders of
the World, will utilize a combination of classic detective story archaeology
and an immersive, hands-on construction demonstration to explore the
following monuments:
Hagia Sophia
Pyramid of the Feathered Serpent, Teotihuacan
Taj Mahal
The Forbidden City
Angkor Wat
Petra
Each episode interviews scientists, historians, and engineers investigating
the building secrets of the ancients. While discovering the historical and
cultural context in which the building was constructed, we work with
architects and engineers to recreate an iconic part of the building using
ancient techniques in combination with modern technologies. For example in
Parthenon, we built a column; in Sphinx we carved a nose using stone hammers
and copper chisels; for Cathedrals we constructed the three engineering
innovations that made Gothic possible the pointed arch, flying buttress,
and ribbed-vaulted ceiling. We plan to utilize a similar approach for the
six buildings to be featured in our Building Wonders of the World series.
We are particularly interested in hearing from experts who can speak to
current research and reconstruction efforts at any of our target sites, as
well as experts involved in constructing stand-ins for these structures or
experimenting with the ancient techniques used to build them.
Scholars and researchers in fields such as archaeology, art history,
architecture and engineering, preservation and environmental conservation,
who would like to be considered to be a part of this project are invited to
send an email of interest including a CV, any relevant publications and, if
available, links to programs in which you¹ve appeared. Send materials to
