Library and Information History Group Event
Tuesday November 9th, 2.30pm

This would be a useful event for any MCLIP, ACLIP or revalidation candidates
who wish to demonstrate awareness of the wider library world and issues
beyond their own organisations. It would also be of interest to students,
graduate trainees, and anyone with an interest in library history.
The event is FREE
(but please do book, so that we have numbers for tea!)
Panel Discussion: The Relevance of Library History.
Speakers: David Pearson, Renae Satterley and Miriam Walters.
David Pearson is the Director of Libraries, Archives & the Guildhall Art
Gallery in the City of London. He has extensive experience of managing and
working in major research collections, and is a respected scholar in the field
of book history. Author of articles and books on the ownership and binding of
books, his most recent work is "Books as history : the importance of books
beyond their texts" (London : British Library, 2008).
Renae Satterley is the editor of the Library and Information History Group
Newsletter. She is a rare books specialist working as Senior Librarian at the
Middle Temple Library. She recently gave a paper for the SAS History of
Libraries Research Seminar on the Library of Robert Ashley (1565-1641)
of the Middle Temple.
Miriam Walters is the Committee Secretary of the Library and Information
History Group. She is a newly qualified librarian, working for the University
of the West of England. She graduated with distinction from the University of
Aberystwyth, writing her part two dissertation on "The history of circulating
libraries in Gloucester and Cheltenham 1731-1788".
Themes discussed will include:
Can Library and Information History have a role in professional development?
Does Library History have practical applications to librarianship today or is
it just an academic discipline?
In hard economic times what can we learn from the experiences of the past?
Do come along and join in the discussion.
The event is preceded by the LIHG AGM at 2pm
to which all LIHG members are welcome.
Non-members may attend as observers.
