Institute of Transport Studies, Department of Civil Engineering, Monash University
A highly prestigious Australian Postgraduate Award Industry (APAI) scholarship is available to undertake full-time research study towards a PhD degree at the Institute of Transport Studies in the Department of Civil Engineering, Monash University, Australia. This exciting project has received Australian Research Council funding as an Industry Linkage Grant. The project involves collaboration between Monash University, VicRoads (the State Road Authority), the Victorian Department of Transport, the Transport Accident Commission, the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria and the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries. The Scholarship is for 3 years full-time to the value of $27,220 per annum (non-taxable, indexed annually).
The scholarship is to undertake research into the mobility and/or environmental impacts associated with Powered-2-Wheel (P2W) vehicles. P2W vehicles in the context of this project includes motor scooters and motor cycles as well as lower powered vehicles such as mopeds and power assisted bicycles. The project aims to enhance understanding about the use of this category of vehicle for utilitarian urban travel and their associated environmental impacts. More details on the scholarship and the project are available from the following web site:

The project leader is Associate Professor Geoff Rose, Director of the Institute of Transport Studies at Monash University. The Institute is one of the nodes of the Australian Research Council Key Centre in Transport Management.
Applications are sought from students with a high level (HI or H2A) Honours degree (or equivalent) in either engineering, economics, geography, behavioural or environmental science, or a field relevant to transport. Candidates with a Masters Degree or experience in travel surveys, GPS travel data collection/analysis, travel behaviour analysis/modelling or life cycle environmental impact analysis will be preferred. Australian citizens and permanent residents are exempt of University student fees, which currently are AU$28,900 per year for PhD students. International students need to show how these funds can be arranged when applying. Limited opportunities may be available for fee scholarships for international candidates who are of exceptional standard, that is, holding the equivalent of a first class undergraduate degree.
