Dear List,
Thank you for your responses to this issue. Here are a few summarising
comments about the thread:
1. On the psci-com homepage (
https://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/cgi-bin/webadmin?A0=PSCI-COM) it says that
psci-com is:
"A list to provide a forum for discussion of any matter relating to
public communication of science and public engagement with science. In
addition, details of events, meetings, conferences and workshops etc can
be posted here."
List membership is very broad, including organisations involved in
public engagement (e.g. museums and libraries), academics, students,
science writers, press officers, programme makers and researchers, and
free-lancers. Inevitably, there are a lot of different interests,
priorities and view points; this is a great strength for the list, but
it only works if everyone feels able to participate in discussions
openly, without recourse to pseudonyms, and equally, without fear of
ridicule.
2. There is no shady 'Them' monitoring this list. It is an open list so
posts are not vetted before being circulated. In my capacity as
list-owner I see messages at the same time as you. I've tried to be as
unobtrusive as possible in administering the list, but when I removed
the LazyResearcher membership I made it very clear who I was, and gave
the reasons for removal:
- The membership was anonymous
- The message was a sarcastic criticism of specific list member
3. The psci-com list is hosted by Jiscmail, and adheres to Jiscmail
guidelines and policies. The Jiscmail Acceptible Use Policy
(http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/policyandsecurity/acceptableuse.htmlstates)
states that:
"You will not attempt to mislead others as to your identity, either by
providing false information when subscribing to, or posting to a
JISCMail list, or by forging the headers and addresses in an email
message"
In addition, Jiscmail etiquette guidelines
(http://www.jiscmail.ac.uk/policyandsecurity/etiquette.html) say:
"Don't call someone names or be rude, sarcastic or condescending"
Prehaps its a measure of how generally well behaved we are as a list
that we've not had to refer to the guidelines before, however I agree
that they should be more visible to list members, so will add these
links to the psci-com signature for future reference.
best wishes
Lalita
