medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear 1s,
as my Subject proclaims, the following isn't a middlevil topic, not by a
Long
Chalk.
but, i happen to know that ListMommie George is presently Napping, so i feel
free to Break All the Rules and go Forward with my inquiry.
besides, i have no idea where else to go to find anything even close to an
answer.
a friend has axed me the following:
"I'm writing a story in which the heroine finds some sort of 18th c. French
prayer book, something that would have been used like a medieval Book of
Hours. Were there printed Books of Hours being used in the late 18th c.? Do
you know what they looked like? Are there any pictures online of such a
book?
I'd like to get this detail right."
from my haunting of Compagnions de Partage Saturday sales in Chartres in the
'80s (which included many vieux livres) it seemed to me that "Books of
Hours"
were replaced, as artifacts of private devotions, sometime in the early 19th
c. (at the latest) by books of championing piety and prayer.
most of the ones i saw seemed to be targeted at Jeunes Filles, but there may
have been some for married ladies as well.
there was a definite feeling that these works reflected both the (somewhat
maudlin) Romanticism of the Era and the (somewhat maudlin) State of the
Church in France, as the latter attempted to recover from the devastations
of
the Revolutionary period.
clearly, my unscientific sampling is of little use for the resolution of the
Questions,
1) Were there (printed or ms.) Books of Hours in the 18th c.?
b) When did the practice/use of Books of Hours, per se, die out? (assuming
that it ever did.)
the Larnéd List's off-the-top-of-the-Head thoughts on this burning matter
would be appreciated.
best,
c
