Hi Shona
Not quite sure what sort of advice you are after, but two things that I have played with outside of the day job spring to mind, though you may already have these covered:
Self hosted short-url Wordpress Plugin - http://yourls.org/#Plugin (linked with Twitter, but you don't have to use that functionality)
WordPress Mobile Pack - http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/wordpress-mobile-pack/ - provides Wordpress mobile templates, and also neat tools so you can run different templates on different platforms e.g. a mobile version at m.yourdomain.com and a 'standard' version at www.yourdomain.com
"Other Wordpress plugins exist" disclaimer applies - there might be something out there that better fits your needs.
I'm afraid I have neither currently running on any live sites I can point you at, but hope that helps. Drop me a line if you have any questions. I'm at the Wikimedia meeting Friday but will be at the joint session in the evening.
