Dear All,

Dr Leonardo Modesto - Wednesday 10/11/10 4.30pm - Maths 103 QMUL

This week in our Wednesday seminar series, Dr Leonardo Modesto from
the Perimeter Institute in Canada will be speaking about "Loop Black
Holes and Dual Universes". The abstract is copied below. The seminar
will start at 4.30pm in Room 103 of the Maths Building on the Mile End
Campus. The discussion group meeting will be held as usual at 3.15pm
in Room 513.

As always, for directions to the building and a list of upcoming
seminars please go to our wiki site at http://cosrel.maths.qmul.ac.uk
.

The speaker is visiting QMUL from Tuesday until Friday and we will be
bringing him out for dinner on Wednesday night.

The School of Mathematical Sciences is undertaking a major
refurbishment programme that will radically change the design to our
building both externally and internally. During the reconstruction, we
regret that access to the building will be limited. If this could
impact upon your intention to attend a seminar, please contact Bill
White on 0207 882 5514 or email to [log in to unmask] to discuss your
particular requirements.

Best wishes,

Ian

"Loop Black Holes and Dual Universes"

Dr Leonardo Modesto - Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in
the Quantum Gravity group.

Abstract: After a short but complete introduction to Loop Quantum
Gravity (LQG) I will show how to apply the theory to the black hole
physics. I will consider the black hole interior (r< 2 G m) at
"quantum" and "semiclassical" level. At the "quantum" level the
Wheeler-DeWitt equation is replaced with a regular difference equation
and it is natural an evolution beyond the "classical singularity".
From a "semiclassical" analysis of the model I found an effective
metric analytical in all spacetime and in particular regular in r=0.
The causal spacetime structure is analogue to the Reissner-Nordstrom
metric but with the singularity in r=0 replaced by another asymptotic
Schwarzschild's region. The spacetime is manifestly self-dual looking
at small and large distances: r-->a0/r, where a0 is the the Planck
area. The meaning of this duality can be make more clear considering
two observers: one at infinity and the other one in r=0. If the first
observer sees an ADM mass "m" the second one sees an ADM mass " ≈
1/m". I will present another metric for which the duality is upgraded
to an isometry. Thermodynamical properties of the loop black hole will
be summarized. I will mention also a recent work on the spinning Kerr
black hole obtained using the Newmann-Janis algorithm. In the last
part of the talk I will show how ultra-light loop black holes remnants
can explain dark matter and ultra-hight cosmic rays.
