Thanks. I got another tip that it should work, and with the help of that tip figured out what was going on ... apparently, Opera cannot deal with the DutchGrid CA certificate. I had somehow managed to get that installed, and having done so, all imports of dutchgrid-based certs failed.
Removing the Dutchgrid CA cert meant I could import my personal cert into the browser. Let's see if I can survive without having the dutchgrid CA cert ...
