Dear colleagues,
I am pleased to announce that next week in the Library of Merrion Square, DIAS,
will be presented a Short Course on "Integrated Studies of Lithospheric
Evolution: A Global Perspective" by Dr. Walter Mooney of the USGS.
(See below - I tried to send a PDF but got blocked by the server)
The 5-day lecture course will comprise lectures each morning from 10:00 to
13:00. Walter will be available for the afternoons for discussions.
The course is free for all, but please let me know if you wish to come in case
the numbers get large and we have to move to a different location.
Please pass this along to colleagues, students, organizations, etc.
With regards,
Alan

Short Course Announcement and Outline (Nov. 22-26, 2010)
Integrated Studies of Lithospheric Evolution: A Global Perspective
A Five-day Short Course by Dr. Walter D. Mooney, USGS-Menlo Park, California
Recently, there has been enormous progress in studies of how the Earth's crust
and the sub-crustal lithosphere have evolved. This progress is due to the
collection of unprecedented new data from around the world. These exciting data
come from the fields of geologic mapping, age dating, geochemical analyses, and
deep geophysical exploration. Likewise, geodynamic modeling and geothermal
studies have played a significant role in providing new insights. Additional
constraints come from GPS measurements of crustal deformation, and satellite
observations of the global gravity and magnetic fields.
This course provides an overview of the cutting-edge research that defines
this exciting and dynamic field. The syllabus is as follows:
Day (2010) Time Topic:
1/1 Nov. 22 10:00-11:15 Course Introduction/ The Early Earth: Origin and Evolution
1/2 Nov. 22 11:30-13:00 Oceans and Continents: A New Geophysical Perspective
