Dear Colleagues,
Gregory Petsko, a Professor of Biochemistry at Brandeis, wrote an open
letter in _Genome Biology_ on 31 Oct 2010 to George M Philip, President of
SUNY Albany, in the wake of massive cuts being made to the humanities there.
The letter is an impassioned defense of the humanities as an indispensable
part of what it means to be a university. Petsko argues that "universities
aren't just about discovering and capitalizing on new knowledge; they are
also about preserving knowledge from being lost over time, and that requires
a financial investment."

All the best,
