Hi Try Buttle Trust who brokered the 1st tick box? Georgina B was doing a
revision with UCAS before she left

Hi Sarah
I agree with the difficulties of just having a tick box on the UCAS form to
identify Care Leavers. We have had a few problems as prospective students
have felt obliged to tick the box when they have perhaps only been in care
for a short time when infants.
My colleague Imelda Devlin from Strathclyde spoke to UCAS to ask if they
could use a drop down menu with a variety of choices that would give a
clearer indication of the amount of time spent in care, how recent it was
and also if they wanted to be identified as Care Leavers. She was told that
this was not possible but I think that this is an issue for both the Care
Leavers and the HEIs and perhaps with support we could get them to make the
changes.

Hi Kirsteen
My first thought is to contact Preeti Dhillon at the Frank Buttle Trust.
She will be able to give you an average figure based on the HEIs who
hold the Quality Mark and have submitted monitoring returns detailing
their care population. I've spoken to her and she is expecting your
email: [log in to unmask]
Secondly, I think your query forms part of a wider issue of
identification through the UCAS tick box.
I'd be interested in gathering informal evidence through this group from
other HEIs who face a similar issue in clarifying their care leaver
population and any implications this may have on your staffing time,
resources and future availability of bursaries etc. Perhaps the answer
could be a clearer statement on the UCAS form? I'd be interested in your
thoughts.
Kind regards
Sarah

Hi
I was wondering if people would be willing to share some basic
information regarding the number of care leavers they have registered
with them this year.
We have had a big year with over 100 new students indicating they are a
care leaver. We often find some of these have ticked the box by
accident, so need to do some preliminary work checking this is accurate
and also need to compile numbers on those care leavers who are staying
to continue their studies with us. I was just interested to get an idea
of how many other care leavers are in HEI. The case used to be that
less than 1% of care leavers reached higher education.
