RESEARCH FELLOW
Joint post with Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit in School of Cancer Sciences and Health Economics Unit in School of Health and Population Sciences
The University of Birmingham has a specific research interest in the diagnosis and treatment of sarcoma which is driven by a close collaboration with the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital in Birmingham and in particular Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon, Mr Robert Grimer. In particular the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit has a portfolio of trials investigating radiotherapy and drug interventions in sarcoma and the Primary Care Clinical Sciences Unit is involved in studies to improve the diagnosis of sarcoma. One area requiring further research is to establish, for patients with soft tissue sarcoma, the optimum follow-up schedule following primary surgery that will provide a level of surveillance for detecting disease recurrence that is cost-effective and acceptable to patients.
Funding has been received from the National Institute for Health Research under the Research for Patient Benefit Programme to undertake this research using a decision modelling approach. This study will be the largest comprehensive investigation of follow-up issues in patients with soft tissue sarcoma and as such will provide important guidance to commissioners and patients. The evidence that this study generates will be sufficient to change national and international guidelines.
This is a collaborative project between the Royal Orthopaedic Hospital, the Health Economics Unit, the Cancer Research UK Clinical Trials Unit and the Primary Care Clinical Science Unit. This collaboration ensures that the project has a multi-disciplinary team of experts in sarcoma, primary care research, decision modelling, biostatistics and qualitative research. This provides the Research Fellow undertaking the project with an exciting environment in which to work. They will also have the opportunity to engage with researchers in the MRC Midland Hub for Trials Methodology Research as the post will be based with this team.
We are seeking applications from individuals who have a numerate background and statistical and/or health economic expertise at a post-graduate level.
