Purpose Statement: The Research Fellow shall have a primary
responsibility for generating and undertaking statistical consulting
projects, particularly through the Clinical Trials Research Unit and the
Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences. In general, the Research Fellow
will be accountable to the Department for all matters including the
consulting, research and University administration.
Full/Part Time: Full-Time
Regular/Temporary: 3 year contract
Salary Level: Research fellow $69,065 - $83,989 per annum;
Position Overview : The Department of Statistics at The University of
Auckland is seeking a statistician at the level of research fellow to
join the SCS team. The position will involve working on consulting and
research projects undertaken by the SCS, both within and outside the
University. The successful candidate will work independently with a
variety of clients, planning and designing future studies, developing or
reviewing study documents, performing data analysis and preparing
reports. The position will also involve establishing good relationships
across commercial and research organisations, and providing professional
statistical support to the University research staff and postgraduate
students.
The Department of Statistics is the largest and most active Statistics
Department in New Zealand and one of the most active in the southern
hemisphere. The Department has more than 40 academic staff, 30 of whom
have positions that include a substantial research component. Staff
in the Department research and teach a full academic programme from
Bachelors to PhDs across a wide range of areas of statistics, with
particular strengths in statistical computing (it is the birthplace of
R), statistical ecology, biostatistics, and sample survey theory. It has
strong Bayesian and applied probability groups. The Department has
approximately 100 graduate students of whom 25 are PhD students. It is
an outward looking Department with strong collaborative links with many
other Departments and Research Institutes. With Auckland being an easy
stop-over point en route to Australia and only 3 hours from Sydney, the
Department attracts many visitors.
Candidates shall have an MSc in Statistics and a PhD would be desirable
but not mandatory. They will have an excellent track record working as
an applied statistician within health research. The following areas are
of particular interest to the department: clinical trials,
biostatistics, epidemiology and sample surveys. The successful
candidate will be familiar with professional statistical software (e.g.
SAS, R). The person we are looking for is customer orientated with
excellent written and verbal communication skills, has a strong sense of
responsibility and is highly motivated. This is a great opportunity for
