No, only for children data I recommend to use customized priors for VBM8. Because VBM8 is not using priors for segmentation only the initial spatial normalization is dependent from the prior (the image TPM.nii).
2) for learning purposes I used just 3 subjects to see the customized template creation step, I got 6 template images named as template 1..6, I am wondering what does this mean, in FSLVBM you can choose as subset of patients for customized template creation and then you average it similarly I am wondering do I need to do averaging, smoothing etc. Where can I find little more elaborate processing steps for customized template creation step using SPM8, VBM8 and how the processing steps from DARTEL (customized template creation step) is linked to the rest of the step.
The 6 different images represent the intermediate steps for each DARTEL iteration. Check the images to see that the last iterations provide more and more spatial details. Additional smoothing or averaging is not necessary. Here are some slides about DARTEL:
