An interesting fact. The first Woman to work at the National Archives was Miss (later Dame) Mary Smieton. She was later press ganged by Lady Reading into helping her set up the Women's Voluntary Service in 1938 and after that worked her way up through the civil service to become permanent secretary in the Ministry of Education in 1959.
