Bartek Plichta is probably one of the best people to ask about these things. He tests a lot of this equipment and maintains info about it on his webpage. (http://bartus.org/akustyk/) M-box (an M-audio product) does a good job of converting tapes to digital formats. (Plug recorder to m-box, m-box to computer) This can be done with Garage Band (which comes free on most macs) or through PRAAT/Akustyk or some other recording software.

And a thought here: I have data that is quite old, but (thankfully) intact. As technology advanced, I asked several researchers what to do with my old reel-to-reel and cassette material. Until recently, the answer was often "nothing--the new technologies are unreliable, and believe it or not, your tapes will last longer than the new media will". So I didn't make use of technologies like DAT. With larger and larger hard drives, I can store more of my stuff digitally on a computer, and the only problem has been finding a way to get the cleanest connection from ancient recorder to modern computer (and even better, to "remaster" my tapes rather like record companies do old tapes from the '60s so that the sound files are Praat-ready). These need professional help, often, which, at my university, is hard to come by, but, theoretically, I can store the stuff from my Ph. D. thesis (1976-77), my Post-Doc (1980-83), and my Nuffield Grant project (1984-85). I would underline the need for multiple, separated copies, incl. CD/DVDs, though.
All I need though is the right, friendly studio guy to help me do this in the cleanest, most efficient way. I've got a project I've wanted to do for years with my Post Doc material (including what I call "ghost phonemes"--sounds that were reported as being merged out of existence but aren't, according to my pre-technology ear) if I can do it.
