Dear all,

The University of Brighton is running its Continuing Professional
Development Course, Making the Most of Digital Heritage, towards the
end of November.

This hands-on course is designed specifically for those museum
professionals who would like to create their own digital content and
would benefit from more information on the technologies, techniques
and issues surrounding digital media.

There are no technical entry requirements: participants need only a
basic understanding of the web i.e. to have looked for information
online and navigated through sites. The course has a wide brief,
looking at all aspects of museums’ digital lives.

The main areas for study and discussion are as shown in this (very
broad) outline:

Museums and their visitors – and how digital can help them both
Museum/gallery websites – good examples, and bad!
Collections – how these play a crucial part in many museums
On-site displays and interactives – exploring good practice and the
differences between off- and online
Digital AV – how to make it cheaply and effectively, and make the most of it
How to commission Digital Media and talk to digital agencies
All backed up with a wide range of case studies

Students on the five-day course will come away with a simple but
complete digital AV product, and the skills to recreate it back at
work.

The course is led by me, Ian Smith, previously the Head of Interactive
at Cogapp. (Blurb: Ian has over 15 years experience providing digital
content for the heritage sector and has worked with many museums, such
as the Science Museum, the National Gallery and the Great North
Museum.)

It will run at the University’s Postgraduate suite, on the Lewes Road
campus in Brighton, and is designed to be very hands-on; each
participant will have their own computer for team and individual work.
They will also get access to some of the very cool in-development
projects at the University, such as Augmented Reality in Schools and
Mobile Tour Guides for Public Monuments.

The course will run from Monday 22nd November and is full-time taken
over 3 or 5 days. The 5-day course includes a day trip to a major
London Museum and follow-up analysis on the last day. The 3 day course
costs £750 + VAT; the 5-day course costs £980 + VAT.

This is an ideal way to increase knowledge and skills in the digital
area, and will help students to make their own content - which is
nearly alway cheaper than using agencies!

Gretton at the University’s Collaborative Training Centre

Thanks for reading!

Ian.
