Dear Frederick,

I agree list discussion about the meetings has been curiously absent but I am not aware of any machinations in smoke filled rooms about the BPS Section developments. I can summarise for you what I know and what I have done personally however.

Susan Eppel (BPS member services) and colleagues invited BPS members who had previously indicated interest in joining a BPS Comm Psych Section (during the protracted Section establishment negotiations) to attend a meeting on the afternoon of 8th Oct. Susan advised there was a limit of 80 people attending due to capacity of the premises (BPS London Headquarters in Tabernacle St). Susan also advised that non BPS members are not eligible to attend this afternoon meeting. This meeting has a main formal function of launching the Section (by a BPS bigwig) and (s)electing an interim committee to steer the Section for one year to formal elections. There will also be limited opportunity for discussion. The agenda was drawn up by the Society but AOB is always a way to raise issues. Susan also invited self nomination for interim committee membership pending elections for a more legitimate committee. You can find all this and more in the List archives.

I volunteered to serve on the interim Comm Psych committee myself. I am currently working in Australia but I have commitments 3 times in the UK in the next year when I could attend Section meetings and I presume most Comm Psych business will be done on line anyway. As you know I am committed to the development of a critically oriented community psychology in the UK and elsewhere. If there are more than enough UK based interim committee members I would be happy to step back and give others room but I would not like the development of the Comm Psych Section to stall due to lack of interim committee members.

A separate meeting open to all comers (not limited to BPS members) is to be held in the morning also in BPS London offices. Sally organised this and can tell you more. I have not been privy to any discussion about this meeting other than the posts on this list.

I am in favour of the parallel development of a community psychology collective, along the lines suggested by Paul Duckett on this list, which is independent of the Section, open to all with a commitment to its objectives. Personally I don't think the morning session on 8th Oct is the place to make decisions about such a collective as the morning is likely to be attended primarily by people there for the Section meeting but of course the morning meeting is quite entitled to discuss both Section and Collective and any other matter. I would have thought that whilst flawed this list is the least bad way of all the ways available currently to take the Collective forward. As a list moderator with Grant I can tell you that this list has been attracting new members lately though posting is light.

One other matter: Jacqui and I are co-convenors of the biennial European Community Psychology Association Congress which will take place in September 2011. The interim committee of the new Community Psychology Section when established might wish to consider holding its BPS Comm Psych Section Conference affiliated to the ECPA one. Jacqui and I made a similar suggestion at Plymouth re. the UK CP Network Conference. The ECPA Conference could also be an opportunity for a meeting of those interested in setting up a UK CP Collective. I am simply floating possibilities here in the absence of decision making structures (the interim committee of the Section should remedy that for the Section).

I hope I don't sound silly; but I seem to have fallen totally out of the loop about this BPS meeting. What is it and who has been invited? As a psychology graduate out of the cold in the community I do wonder how out in the open current organisational developments in community psychology are at the moment. I for one don't want professional "us and them".

Nadia, I like your sense of humour. However, I was thinking you will get plenty of black looks anyway, as I am not in everyone's best books through being outspoken, so you need to amend your name label to say 'NOT Erica Brostoff,' I think. !!!! Have fun ! Erica
