Hi Neil
Dynamics used to supply a 'cross restrictor plate' part number GME55046
which I think is basically a 4-way gate for their sticks.
A few months ago I wanted to find a gated joystick (for a computer) for a
client who really needs the gate and also a fairly long stick and I spoke to
various companies about it. Traxsys said they don't supply gates and to
contact Apem, who make their sticks. Apem didn't do gates. P&G Drives could
supply long handles (see
http://www.pgdt.com/products/accessories/accessories.html) but not gates
although P&G Controls do gates for some of their sticks (see the JC2000
datasheet at
http://www.pennyandgiles.com/Multi-Axis-Contactless-Joystick-Controller-pd-8
5,3,28,18.php). As far as I remember they said the gate was a part that
would be fitted at manufacture and wasn't available as a spare.
I bought a couple of switched Arcade sticks from Active Robots
http://www.active-robots.com/products/components/joysticks.shtml
and they are both supplied with 4 way gates. Cheap too. I've not actually
put them in a box for someone to use yet though so don't know about
reliability and longevity. You'd need a switch interface on the chair, of
course.
Making your own gate might be fastest...

Subject: 4-Way power chair controller
Hi,
I have a patient who has used an Akka successfully and wants to
replicate this in a powered wheelchair. She has tried an 8-way switch
control (Moozi from Meru and Dynamics HD Joystick), but we wish to have
something as simple as possible, ie only 4 way. The Akka has a nice
gated system so the controller slots into the direction desired.
Separate switches for directions won't work.
Has anyone any bright ideas or off the shelf solutions to help with
this?
Many thanks,
Neil Gregory
