Dave thanks for the post.
That's amazing that such comic book readership data doesn't exist. I find
that hard to believe considering how much polling and focus research the
other related entertainment industries do.
The comic book world has seen an explosion in the female demographic, a
testament to that effect would be this new geek girls video, with tons of
references to fantasy, science fiction and mythic comic worlds popular with
both genders - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_eJmYKN_1QE (I was only able
to get about 75% of the fantasy references in the lyrics and assume it's
because I'm not a girl)
Relating to research on comic readership demographics, there is the Daedalus
Project which studies the psychology of those who "live" in online fantasy
worlds, which covers everything from religious belief systems to employment
and gender break downs, etc. What do you think are the leading superstitious
beliefs among those who play popular online fantasy games? And how do those
beliefs influence behavior? They're researching it, and more, here are all
the research articles -
