Right you are, Birger,
Golly -- I'm befuddled. Does the Service Design Network realize in planning these conferences that no one can afford to come from Australia for a two-day conference? I can see that those who can't afford to go from the US to Europe might want to attend the "special one-day conference" two weeks later, but the best thing to do would be to arrange full conferences in alternate years. Or at least put something together on a larger scale in Berlin. It also would help if the Service Design Network had notified their members -- my university participates in the network, and this is the first I've heard of this.
Not a great example of service design. Sigh.
But Berlin .... Some years ago, a friend of mine was President of NBC News back when network news was big. He once recounted an incident that took place in the newsroom when John F. Kennedy gave his famous speech in Berlin.
The room was crowded with journalists watching a live feed as they planned the evening news broadcast -- very expensive in those days! Kennedy got to the the most famous passage in the speech:
"Two thousand years ago -- Two thousand years ago, the proudest boast was 'civis Romanus sum.' Today, in the world of freedom, the proudest boast is 'Ich bin ein Berliner.'"
From the back of the room, one newsie shouted out, "Und ich bin ein Linzer torte!"
Perhaps the Service Design Network will take up baking. Who knows what the future will bring?

Service Design Conference 2010
This year the Service Design Network will be hosting two conferences! Due to the huge level of interest in the last years, we are pleased to invite you to Berlin and Cambridge in October 2010.
The first conference 'Connecting the Dots' will take place on October 13th & 14th in Berlin, Germany. We will present a vivid mix of different presentations, workshops and papers in order to provide you with academic and practical expertise from renowned international players in the Service Design field.
Just two weeks later, on October 29th a special one-day conference will be held in Cambridge, U.S.A. This conference applies to service companies, institutions, public service, universities and Service Design agencies around the world; working on continuous improvement and innovation of services and dealing with the subject of Service Design, or wanting to get into it in the future.
