medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Dear Otfried,
Since the cross occurs at the beginning/end of a circular inscription,
it is effectively in both positions. On the seals the name is often
accompanied by a few other words, so the cross does not come immediately
after. On http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/Charters1.html, see e.g. Charles
the Simple 921, +KAROLVSGRADIREX+(or*). Combined use is clearer on the
coins (http://www.kornbluthphoto.com/HistoricalCoins1.html): Charlemagne
+KAROLVSREXFR(+), Louis the Pious +HLVDOVVICVSIMP(+), Pippin I of
Acquitaine +PIPPINVSREX(+).
Some very interesting work on crosses popping up all over the place,
particularly in Anglo-Saxon contexts, has been done by Catherine Karkov
and Karen Jolly. I have heard much of this in conference papers rather
than reading the full articles, but see the Sancta Crux/Halig Rod
series, ed. Catherine Karkov, Sarah Larratt Keefer and Karen Jolly,
including /The Place of the Cross in Anglo-Saxon England/, Manchester
Centre for Anglo-Saxon Studies, Boydell and Brewer Press, 2006.
Best,
Genevra
