Subject: [OZAdvocacy] Ron McCallum re-elected to CRPD Committee
Hi all,
David Webb here, your roving reporter in New York for the CRPD Conference of
States Parties.
Earlier today Ron McCallum was the only candidate elected to the CRPD
Commitee on the first ballot. I think this represents a strong endorsement
of Ron's first term on the Committee and especially his time as the chair
since the start of this year.
Five other people were also elected, four in the second ballot and one in a
third ballot:
Ms Theresia Degener, Germany,
Mr Carlos Rios Espinosa, Mexico
Ms Edah Wangechi Maina, Kenya
Mr Hyung Shik Kim, Korea
Mr Lotfi Ben Lallahom, Tunisia
This election was to replace the six Committee members standing down at the
end of this year.
With the number of ratifications now more than 80, another 6 people will be
elected later today, making a Committee of 18 members. I'll let you know
who gets the nod as soon as I can.
This second election will likely take the rest of the day, which blows the
original agenda for the first day out of the water. Which means an already
full agenda, plus numerous side events, will now need to be compressed into
the next two days of the Conference.
Meanwhile, it's a heatwave outside nudging 100 degrees (they still use the
old scale here) and a major hurricane is blowing hard off the coast and
heading this way ... though will probably calm down a bit before it reaches
here ... and before I fly home on Saturday ...
Stay tuned for more reports as the news unfolds and time permits ...
Best wishes - David
