I'd be grateful if you could bring the following to the attention of
anyone who may be interested.
British Toy Making Project - Volunteer Placement
The V&A Museum of Childhood, London, is currently looking for a
volunteer to work on the British Toy Making project. This is a
three-year, HLF-funded project to catalogue, conserve and make available
the archives of four major 20th century British toy manufacturers -
Lines Bros. Ltd., Mettoy, Palitoy and Paul and Marjorie Abbatt Ltd. - as
well as other examples of toy manufacturing archive material acquired by
the Museum over the years. The material consists of photographs,
letters, catalogues, designs, essays, leaflets and books - providing a
fascinating insight into numerous areas of interest, including
industrial and social history, design, education and war.
The main tasks consist of: producing box-lists of a number of the
Museum’s archive collections (in particular the Celia Haddon
collection of material relating to school life and the Museum’s series
of Maker’s Files containing catalogues and other information about toy
manufacturers); transcribing into MS word oral history interviews; and
assisting the archivist in identifying the ownership of copyright of
material within the archive and in contacting and obtaining permission
from copyright holders for digital reproduction. There is also a
potential to become involved in the cataloguing of archive material
using EAD software, and in responding to enquiries from members of the
public.
The volunteer will benefit from first-hand experience of a broad range
of archival work within a larger Museum context, and will be working
closely with the archivist and other curatorial staff. We are
particularly keen to hear from people interested in undertaking a
postgraduate qualification in archives, but also encourage applications
from other backgrounds.
The work would suit an individual able to initially make a 2-3 month
commitment working 1-2 days per week, although we would also consider a
more intensive full-time block.
For an informal discussion please contact Ieuan Hopkins on 020 8983

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer with this project, please
send a CV with covering letter, including details of what you would hope
to gain from this placement and when you would be available to undertake
it, to:
