This isn't a new approach. The mechanism of using a system to identify
ethnicity based on name has been around for a while and has numerous
challenges from missing ethnic communities who have traditionally
English/Anglo Saxon names such as black Africans to assuming ethnicity
and not allowing people to self identify.
That said, in the absence of good quality ethnicity data across all of
our GPs, we have used this systems ourselves to give us a rough map of
patient ethnicity by GP geography. I'd be cautious about using for
anything other than a rough picture though.
